THE COVER GAMES: passenger, by alexandra bracken

the cover games

the cover games is a feature here at the twirling pages! i’ll be discussing: miraculous cover changes, battles between the US cover/UK cover, heart-eye-emoji covers, and well all things book cover related!

(shameless fact: i will judge a book based on it’s cover.)

THE COVER FOR PASSENGER BY ALEXANDRA BRACKEN HAS DROPPED PLEASE REMAIN CALM *exhales* sorry for the screaming and all-caps; i’m just so so so so so excited. if you don’t know, alex bracken is one of my favorite authors. read my past blog posts and you’ll see that i rave about the darkest minds, her other trilogy, way too much. but today we’re going to be talking about her new duology that is going to be released in 2016! you can read alex’s interview and official cover reveal segment here!! it includes a teaser of the first chapter as well! (if you’re wondering, i read it and i would like the novel NOW.)

according to the blurb, it’s going to be about time travel, pirates, romance, and a violinist… I LOVE IT ALREADY. alex herself said it was a mashup between outlander and national treasure. SQUEEE. (okay, i’m really sorry this entire post is basically me fangirling and screaming. i’m just really excited.) moving onto the real reason of this post: the cover reveal… LOOK AT IT:

it’s glorious! i really really REALLY love the typeface. i saw the preview of the cover – which is basically the title on a black background – and i loved it already because the type is gorgeous. i’m a big sucker for nice script fonts and well, this is a very nice script font. the hard serif font for ‘alexandra bracken’ is also a nice touch. it contrasts with the script perfectly and adds a very nice ‘pirates of the caribbean’ vibe.

moving onto the image: it’s very.. striking? eye-catching? mysterious? COOL? i couldn’t think of a good adjective for it, but those all work. i love how inside the bottle, we see manhattan and the brooklyn bridge and the water… theeeeen the water in the shadow reflects and there’s a SHIP. a pirate ship to be specific. it’s perfectly incorporated with the story! however it makes me wonder why the image is in a bottle. i know messages in the bottle and pirates, but what does it mean? is it trying to tell us something? is it a message? or is it just a pretty design? i want to know mooooore. hopefully it’s metaphorically explained in the book. i also love how it’s glowing. the colors are really pretty and everything is precisely focused.

the thing is, i can’t decide on which aspect of the cover i like best. the entire thing is very nicely put together and beautiful. i like it better than the darkest minds’ series covers because anyone can understand it. it’s still mysterious because the shadow is different from the actual image, but we can assume it’s about pirates simply from the cover. for the darkest minds, the cover was the psi symbol, which you wouldn’t understand unless you read the books. everything about this cover is much more sharper and intense.

real-life gifs of me trying to contain my feelings:

(yes, i had to include pirates of the caribbean and doctor who gifs because PIRATES AND TIME TRAVEL GUYS. do you have any idea how thrilled i am? the all-caps, italics, post-dedication, and gifs are just a teeny tiny bit of how i’m feeling.)

what are your thoughts on the cover?

the cover games

the cover games is a feature here at the twirling pages! i’ll be discussing: miraculous cover changes, battles between the US cover/UK cover, heart-eye-emoji covers, and well all things book cover related!

(shameless fact: i will judge a book based on it’s cover.)

because the ‘carry on’ cover was released this past week, i thought it seemed appropriate to talk about another rainbow rowell book as well: landline. there’s also a new cover for the us paperback and it’ll be released on july 7, 2015! there are a few different editions for landline, but today we’ll be talking about the us hardcover, us paperback, and uk hardcover.

us cover - landline

the us hardcover is probably my least favorite of the three. i don’t find it very eye-catching and i don’t like how there isn’t an actual landline on the cover; there’s only the handle/phone part (sorry i don’t know what it’s officially called, but you know what i mean). i looks nicer in physical format because there are pink and yellow stripes on the endpapers and spine (i think). i don’t actually own this edition so i’m not 100% sure. overall, meh.

uk cover - landline

i went out of my way to purchase the uk hardcover because i love it. everything is so much brighter and cuter than the us hardcover. i really like the choice in typeface (handwritten for author/tagline, cursive for title). i really really like how it’s incorporated into the image – which is a landline. (aka the main reason i didn’t like the us hardcover) i like how the title and everything is part of the image. it ties the whole thing together.

us cover - landline(pb)

the new us paperback is an improvement. i like it better than the us hardcover, but i still prefer the uk hardcover over this one. the text is much bigger and easier to read; i also like how it looks like someone traced the outline of the typeface so it’s less.. serious? i dunno, the whole thing is more adorable. i love this color scheme; it’s much brighter and more appealing than the other gray one. also there’s actually a landline (!!).

so… in order from favorite to least favorite: uk hardcover, us paperback, us hardcover.

you can buy the uk hardcover here, the us hardcover here, and preorder the us paperback here! there’s also a new uk paperback cover, which i adore as well, that can be preordered here.

there’s also a really gorgeous redesign of the landline cover done by risa rodil and it looks like:

if i could purchase an edition like this, i would. actually if i had a choice, i’d probably have five editions of all my favorite books in multiple covers. yes, that’d be a dream come true. you can learn more about risa rodil by clicking the image!

which is your favorite? let me know in the comments!

top six favorite authors

top ten tuesday

top ten tuesday is a weekly feature started by the broke and the bookish! you can find more information about it here.

this week’s top ten six was a struggle. i’ve been feeling a blogging slump and even the simplest thing – like making a list of my favorite authors – was difficult. i dunno; i’ve just been feeling out of it. i don’t know how to elaborate. anyway, here’s my list of favorite authors:

there are tons of authors that could also be considered my favorites, but i didn’t want to add them to the list because i only read one or two books of their books. would they really count as my favorite author? i feel like it’s a bit unfair to only judge by one book – even if i really really loved it. thus, the extremely short list.

who are your favorite authors? let me know in the comments!

EPIC READS TAG // ft. tea with john green, #magnico, and more!

epic reads is one of my favorite book publishing communities; to me, it’s the like “buzzfeed” of ya literature. (and i LOVE buzzfeed.) they have swoon-worthy instagram posts, hilarious tweets, relatable videos, and well… EPIC READS. i was stalking roaming through their youtube channel when i came across an epic reads tag video! i watched it, fell in love with the clever questions, and decided to bring it to the blogging community! (if it isn’t already here…) i wasn’t tagged, but i just wanted to do it because.. why not?! it’s quite epic.

here we go!!

1) if you could invite one author and one of their fictional characters to tea, who would you invite and what would you serve them?

tea seems like something that’d ensue a long conversation, so i’d choose john green and augustus waters. in a way, i feel like i know john green simply because i watch his vlogbrothers videos. i know what he sounds/looks/talks even though i’ve never met him in real life. also judging from his books, he seems like a super intellectual guy that could really make you think. also i’ve always wanted to meet gus. *sighs* i’d try serve something from oranjee, and probably epically fail.

2) what book do you wish the author could write a prequel for?

i’d have to choose looking for alaska by john green. (argh. i promise i’m not choosing john green for all the answers.) but seriously, i’d like to know more about alaska. there are so many unanswered questions about her, and whenever we do see her, pudge is usually fantasizing about how hot she is.. i want to know alaska before pudge was in the picture. she was so mysterious and it seemed like she would have a reasonable explanation as to why she acted the way she did.

3) which two characters (not from the same book) do you think would make a good couple?

the pairings i thought of were so random and absolutely hilarious. this question is definitely the hardest, and maybe my favorite. i thiiiink i would go with nico di angelo (from the heroes of olympus series by rick riordan) and magnus bane (from the mortal instruments series by cassandra clare). they are like, complete opposites, but i feel like they would actually be good together. i can totally imagine magnus cracking some awful jokes and nico just giving giving him a flat stare (and trying not to blush). i don’t even know. it’s 1am and i might find myself insane in the morning, but it works at the moment. i’m actually really liking this pairing, but the more i think about it, the weirder it gets. would their ship name be #magnico or #banegelo?

awkward smile

4) if you ran into your favorite author on the subway and only could say one sentence to them, who is it and what would it be?

cures you for making me choose one author and one sentence. the struggle. the author would be…alexandra bracken and i would say something along the lines of, “hi, i love your books and there’s a million things i’d like to say to you, but here’s my email so we can talk more later,” as i hand her a slip of paper with my email address.

5) what book made you a reader and why?

charlotte’s web by e.b. white. it was the first “big” book i’ve ever read (aka chapter book) and i was super proud of myself when i finished. that’s when i knew i loved reading. it was my very early stages of fangirling. i don’t think i became an obsessive reader until i read the clique series by lisi harrison.

6) incendio! your bookshelf just caught on fire. show us the one book you save.

probably one of my lisi harrison books. they’re the only books that i have signed and personalized because i went to an author event, and it’s the only author event i’ve ever been to. i have other books that are signed, but it’s just not the same. also, the lisi harrison books have some sentimental value. after all, i proudly became a fangirl after reading her series.

the clique by lisi harrison

7) which dystopian world would you want to live in if you had to choose one? why?

dystopian worlds are kinda cool, but mostly awful. if i had to choose, i’d pick the darkest minds by alexandra bracken. if i’m still alive, i would end up having super epic powers! i wonder what it’s like to levitate things, or set something on fire, or electrocute something, or memorize like a boss, or read someone’s mind.. you have to admit, it sounds pretty awesome. buuuut the society wants you dead and you’re forced into concentration camps… i guess there’s good and bad to everything.

8) what is your most epic read of all time?

define epic. do you mean: plot-twist epic, i-love-this-so-much epic, i’m-sobbing epic, or what? for all of the above, i think my most epic read would be the infernal devices series by cassandra clare. i read all three books nonstop for four days and was in a mourning period and withdrawal mode for about… a year. (actually, i still mourn for that series). it’s still one of my favorites.

oh. my. goodness. those questions were extremely difficult. i spent quite some time pondering on my answers, and i still don’t feel completely satisfied. nowwww onto the tagging.

i tag…

okay, so i’m preeetty sure none of these bloggers do tags (???) but i just love their blogs and wanted to give it a shot – even if it meant no one ended up doing it. anyway, you can go follow them because fabulous blogs~! if you end up doing this tag, please leave your link down below! i’d really love to see your answers!

taylor swift book tag!

taylor swift book tag

i saw this tag floating around booktube and have been wanting to do for ages! it was started by thebooklife and i’m glad someone brought it to the blogging community (idk who, but thank you!). i was tagged by kath to do this tag! thank you for tagging me because i love taylor swift and and book tags. ❤ sorry for taking so long for me to post it, it’s been in my drafts folder for months.

the rules are super simple.. just follow the instructions.

1. we are never ever getting back togetherpick a book (or book series) that you were pretty sure you were in love with, but then wanted to break up with

for this, i’m going to be choosing delirium; by lauren oliver. i loved the first book in this trilogy – it’s still one of my favorite books – but the second two novels disappointed me immensely. it got slow and the last one felt really unfinished. i continue to reread delirium, but the other two… we are never ever ever getting back together.

2. red: pick a book with a red cover

i’m going to chooooose pride and prejudice; by jane austen! my copy is red-ish pink and i love the cover, so why not??

3. the best day ever: pick a book that makes you feel nostalgia

probably one of the very first books that i stayed up reading was charlotte’s web; by e.b. white. i remember it being my favorite book for years, and i swear it was the one the got me hooked on reading. thinking of charlotte and wilbur’s adventures fill me with lots and lots of ~nostalgia~

4. love story: pick a book with a forbidden love

ooooooo forbidden love, one of my favorite tropes! i’ll be choosing blue and gansey from the raven boys series; by maggie stiefvater. they don’t have many really emotional scenes, but FEELINGS. their chemistry is perfect and it physically hurts. *swoon*

5. i knew you were trouble: pick a book with a bad character you couldn’t help but love

if you read my best of the best (2014) post, you would know i’m a sucker for the bad guy. you know, the mean ones who always have a sob-worthy backstory and are actually super soft and sweet on the inside. yeah, those guys. i love them. sometimes they’re the antagonist, sometimes they’re not, but regardless i love them. for this i will be choosing.. warner from the shatter me trilogy; by tahereh mafi!

6. innocent: pick a book someone ruined the ending for

i’m usually pretty good at avoiding spoilers, but when i do get spoiled i’m usually in denial. the book i was spoiled the ending for was clockwork princess; by cassandra clare. i was on tumblr stupid xan and just finished clockwork prince, and just had to look through the tag to express my feels. i was being really careful to quickly scroll through anything that look mildly suspicious. then BOOM. someone spoiled the ending of clockwork princess for me. i was in complete denial, until i read to that part of the book, and to say the least, i saw it coming. i suppose it was my fault. moral of the story: stay away from the internet until you’ve finished the book.

7. everything has changed: pick a character from a book that goes through extensive character development

one of the main reasons why i love the darkest minds trilogy is because of the insanely amazing characters and their development. for this, i’ll be choosing ruby daly from the darkest minds by alexandra bracken. i cannot say enough good things to show how much i love this series. ruby changes so much from the first book and her development i just. teARS.

8. you belong with me: pick your most anticipated book release

there are so many books i’m looking forward to read this year, but winter; by marissa meyer tops the list. cress, the previous book of the series was nearly f l a w l e s s.

give it to me

9. forever and always: pick your favorite book couple

you’re asking me to pick one book couple?! how am i suppose to choose????? after much thought, i decided to choose will and tessa from the infernal devices series; by cassandra clare! i was originally going to choose percy and annabeth from the percy jackson and the olympians series; by rick riordan, but i feel like their song should’ve been state of grace, not forever and always. anyway, i LOVE will and tessa. i actually cry thinking about them. FEELINGS.

10. come back, be here: pick the book you would least like to lend out, for fear of missing it too much

for this, i’ll be choosing the fault in our stars; by john green. this is one of my favorite books, and my edition is signed! i actually have three copies, but i don’t think i would ever lend any of them. the first is an ebook, the second is the signed version, and the final one is a limited edition project for awesome version.

11. shake it off: pick a book you love so much, you shake off all the haters

for obvious reasons, i’m going to be choosing the darkest minds trilogy; by alexandra bracken. i rave about this trilogy way too much. it’s my favorite trilogy eveeerrr and it’s the bestest. love love love! haters going to hate, but i’m just going to SHAKE. IT. OFF.

bonus questions i’ve added because i love t.swizzle!

12. sparks fly:  pick a book you fell in love with starting from the first sentence

lately i’ve been a bit obsessed with first sentences in books* and i choose paper towns; by john green! the first sentence is: “the way i see it, everyone gets a miracle.” ahhh, i knew this was going to be a winner.

*STORY TIME: i found this really epic first sentence online, but i can’t seem to remember where i found it (blog, goodreads, youtube..?). i went searching for over two hours googling the first sentence of recent books i put on my tbr list and i couldn’t find anything. it’s gotten to the point where i’m fairly sure this was all a dream. buuut i’m still hoping it exists even though i have no idea where i found it. *sigh*

13. wonderland: pick a fantasy world you would like to live in (from a book, obviously!)

fantasies usually have it’s ups and downs: you’re either a character with super cool powers, or everyone else. if i were one of the “special people,” i’d like to be a demigod in the percy jackson/heroes of olympus series; by rick riordan. demigods are so cool. also, living in this world isn’t so different from the real world.. there are just monsters attacking and the world kinda ending and raging gods/goddesses.. not bad.

14. if this was a movie: pick your favorite book to movie adaptation

i’ve got to choose the great gatsby; by f. scott fitzgerald. that movie was.. wow. i watched it immediately after i finished the book and it was basically what i imagined in my mind, put in movie form. there were almost no changes and also.. LEO DICAPRIO. the set up, soundtrack, and everything was just so good. in case you didn’t realize, i’m talking about the 2013 movie, not the 1974 one.

15. fifteen: pick a book set in high school

one of my favorite high school books are the gallagher girl series; by ally carter. i read these in like, fourth grade, and loved them from the start. it’s very different from a normal high school, but it’s a high school nonetheless! the girls have prom, graduation, and all the normal stuff, even though they’re spies going on insane missions.

taylor swift is one of my favorite artists and i’ve been listening to her since the first album. i can (almost) sing every single song without mistake. even if i tried, i wouldn’t be able to choose a favorite song. (but at the moment, it’s probably new romantics.) if you’re reading this, you’re tagged. mostly because i want to see everyone’s response to this tag because i actually know all these songs.

what’s your favorite taylor swift song? let me know in the comments!

THE COVER GAMES: the perks of being a wallflower

header - perks

the cover games is a feature here at the twirling pages! i’ll be discussing: miraculous cover changes, battles between the US cover/UK cover, thank-you-for-existing covers, was-the-designer-drunk covers, and well all things book cover related!

(shameless fact: i will judge a book based on it’s cover.)

i actually own both copies of the perks of being a wallflower; i originally purchased it in the green us paperback, but i had to buy the uk version as well because it’s beautiful. today, i’ll be comparing the us and uk covers and decide which i prefer!

the us cover is very simplistic. the green is a nice color and i like how the title is scrunched together at the top in small type. if you’re looking from far away, it’s almost like the book doesn’t have a title altogether. at the corner, there’s a small photo of loafers and dress shoes, which i think represents the book’s anonymity really well.

the uk cover is a bit of a mess. the background looks like a crumpled paper with incoherent writing all over the place. there’s a clip of charlie trying to hide at the upper right hand side. in a handwritten typeface, there’s the title of the book clearly executed across everything. i think this represents the story perfectly. it’s basically a diary, but in letter format. diaries aren’t usually kept perfectly clean. also, charlie’s life is a bit messy as well. the photos show charlie trying to hide – from himself, from the readers, and from life.

there’s also a blue uk cover, which i do not own.. the background and text match in terms of color, and it makes it seem as if someone wrote over the person. for the most part, there’s a silhouette of a boy (which i assume is charlie) taking over the cover. the silhouette could also double as a shadow, which is basically what a wallflower is – a person in the shadows unnoticed. i also like how the title and author is in an original typeface that bends and matches the space around it. there’s also a nice texture over the whole thing that makes it look finished.

i like all these covers! they’re gorgeous in their own way, and represent the story very well. buuuut if i had to choose a favorite, the winner would be..

winner: the messy uk cover

why? i like how the uk cover is basically a perfect oxymoron for the book: ordered chaos. the letters are clean and start/finish nicely (dear friend; love, charlie), but the content is chaotic. in my opinion, it’s the best representation of the story also a beautiful design. annnnd i’m a sucker for handwritten typefaces.

you can buy the uk version that i own here; the us version here; and the blue uk version here!

which cover do you prefer? let me know in the comments!

love always,

top ten tuesday is a weekly feature started by the broke and the bookish! you can find more information about it here.

heroes are great, but heroines are even better. #GIRLSRULE! i was so excited when i read this week’s top ten tuesday because.. heroines! you know, the girls who are epic, kickass, and a hopeless romantic? yeah, i’m talking about those girls. in no particular order, here are my top ten favorite heroines.

  1. {reyna from the heroes of olympus series; by rick riordan} heroines can be side characters, right? if there’s anyone who is a hero, it’s reyna. she deserves waaayyy more credit than she gets. the romans would be lost without her. (actually, they would have octavian, who is 10000x worse than having no leader at all.)
  2. {ruby daly from the darkest minds trilogy; by alexandra bracken} um.. if there’s a series i talk about too much, it’s the darkest minds. ruby is so epic and goes through a tremendous amount of character development i just love her so much.
  3. {june iparis from the legend trilogy; by marie lu} june is too smart for words. not only was she the republic’s prodigy and cracked all the codes, she made the right decisions in the end because she’s.. june! if i had to choose an all-time favorite female character, i would probably choose june.
  4. {tris prior from the divergent series; by veronica roth} there is a reason why tris is the FOURth girl on my list *wink wink* there are a million reasons why tris is a hero: selfless, brave, smart, DIVERGENT. the reasons why she’s brave is too obvious. i’m not even going to try explaining.
  5. {isabelle lightwood from the mortal instruments series; by cassandra clare} IZZY! i have no words. if you’ve read tmi, you would know that izzy’s simple existence screams, “badass hero.”
  6. {kestrel trajan from the winner’s curse series; by marie rutkoski} maybe i’m choosing kestrel because i just finished the book, or maybe i’m choosing her because kestrel is so good. she’s not scary and inhuman, but she’s a genuinely good person. you rarely see that nowadays. she has the ability to be powerful, but she chooses differently.
  7. {annabeth chase from the percy jackson series; by rick riordan} i didn’t want to choose two characters from the same series, but this doesn’t count right? i mean, she was also in hoo, but she was the star of the show in pjo. daughter of athena, you are the boss.
  8. {cammie morgan from the gallagher girls series; by ally carter} no one really talks about cammie, but we musn’t forget that she’s a super epic spy. i mean, she can switch between fourteen languages during lunch. who does that? she also deals with crazy ops and is in high school while this is all going on.
  9. {tessa gray from the infernal devices series; by cassandra clare} how do i begin to describe tessa? she’s.. no words. (also, the luckiest girl in the worlds because WILL HERONDALE.)
  10. {cinder from the lunar chronicles; by marissa meyer} cinder is a cyborg that is super, unintentionally rebellious. we’re rooting for you cinder! you are the best, and don’t let the crazy lunars make you feel less.

girls, just remember to stay fierce and be beyoncé.

who are your favorite heroines? let me know in the comments!

top 10 new year’s resolutions

top ten tuesday is a weekly feature started by the broke and the bookish! you can find more information about it here.

twenty-fourteen is nearly over and i have no words. i would be reminiscent and say all the fabulous things that occurred in the past year, but i’ll save that for tomorrow’s “farewell and foresight” post. i suppose it’s time to make a list of resolutions. most people create a list, forget the list by mid-january, then move on with their year. two years ago, i decided to make my resolutions into reality. i created a .pages file entitled, “new year’s resolutions,” and every year i have my list and cross out the things i’ve accomplished in the past year.

new year's resolutions

i won’t have the same things on the .pages file as on this blog simply because everything is kind of vague. “dress better” and “wake up earlier” are too open and more as goals for myself. and since i’m a firm believer in goal-making, i easily have ten goals in every category of my life.. so i present to you, my top ten bookish/blog goals of 2015:

  • buy less books because i’m a compulsive book-buyer
  • sleep before 2am. if i need to read/blog, do it in the morning.
  • attend a book-ish event (author signing, expo, etc.)
  • continue blogging. i usually try something out for a few months, then give up and move onto something else. i want to keep blogging in my life.
  • contact publishers (when i feel ready, but) sometime this year
  • read 60 books
  • learn to schedule posts at least weeks beforehand
  • visit the strand! (part of the “going to new york” goal)
  • comment and interact more with others since i really don’t do that sorry guys
  • move to!

what are your goals for the new year? are you excited as i am?
